For over 130 years, the J N Tata Endowment, established by Jamsetjee Nusserwanjee Tata, the visionary behind the Tata Group, has been granting loan scholarships to over 5,600 Indian students from various corners of the nation. 

What is a JN Tata Endowment?

Dedicated to promoting exceptional talent, the Endowment exclusively sponsors advanced studies abroad, encompassing Master’s, Ph.D., and Post-doctoral fellowships across diverse educational disciplines. Its sole criterion is merit, aiming to recognize and support “the finest and most talented individuals, enabling them to contribute significantly to the nation’s progress.

Eligibility

→ Indian applicants under 45 years, with 60%+ marks from recognized Indian universities, eligible.

→ Candidates who did not get selected last year can reapply.

→ Awarded but unused loan scholars can apply following the full selection process.

→ Missed J N Tata Endowment at study start? Apply after 1st year with 12+ months of study left.

→ Final-year students awaiting results can apply.

→ Admission is not required during application; update later upon securing admission.

→ Diplomas requiring ≥1-year duration with higher secondary entry ineligible.

→ No eligibility for overseas events, distance learning, online or Indian studies.

Application & Selection Process

There are four steps to the overall selection process, and after each, candidates will be notified of the status of their application.

The application will be denied at any stage if the information provided by candidates is either inaccurate or incomplete, and the Endowment will not respond to any inquiries on the rejection.

Candidates are unable to make any modifications to the application once it has been submitted. The reference number (found on the top left side of the form) must be emailed to [email protected] if the applicant wishes to make any changes or edits to the application form.

Each file must be uploaded as a grayscale PDF with the appropriate nomenclature.

There are 4 phases of application:

Documents submission

Shortlisting for online test

Shortlisting for Technical interview

Final interview

Final Decision

 

The following criteria are used to determine who will receive the loan scholarship in the end:

1) Interview performance 

2) online test score

3) evaluation of academic performance, GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL/PTE scores, statement of purpose, and job history.

At the latest, the first week of July will see the mail-out of all the awards. The choice made by the Trustees regarding scholarship awards is final. We won’t be able to respond to any correspondence in this regard.

Post-Selection Process

1. Candidates and guarantors must visit the office to complete formalities, sign an agreement, and provide repayment evidence after obtaining a visa.

2. Repayment in five 20% installments between the third and seventh years, with an option to start earlier.

3. Each candidate needs a guarantor of equal liability.

4. Normally parent/spouse, or if not possible, specific relatives can be guarantors.

5. Non-relatives can be guarantors with Endowment approval and documentation.
